Privacy Policy

Last updated: 13 October 2026

Iris is an iPhone app for actors, built by an actor. This policy explains what Iris collects, why, how long it's kept, and what you can do about it.

The short version

Who's responsible

Iris is run by Gavin Etmanski, a sole proprietor in British Columbia, Canada. There is no separate company. Contact: [email protected].

Depending on where you live, British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), Canada's PIPEDA, the UK GDPR, and California's privacy law may apply. Your rights under each are listed below.

What Iris collects

Your recordings, edits, and size cards stay on your phone. Iris only collects the following when you use the features that need it:

Iris doesn't collect your name, email address, age, birthday, or location. A size card can include your name, but it stays on your phone unless you put it into a recording you upload.

Review links

When you use Send for Review, the clips you choose are uploaded to our storage (Cloudflare R2) and you get a private link. Anyone with the link can watch and leave notes for 24 hours. Video plays through temporary addresses that last about 15 minutes each.

After 24 hours, the page stops playing the video. An automatic cleanup runs every night to delete the video and notes. If a cleanup fails, it tries again, so occasionally a file stays in storage a little longer before it's removed.

You can end a link early by tapping Stop sharing on the Link Ready screen. That deletes the video and notes straight away. Sending a new link for the same project also turns the old one off.

After a link ends, we keep a small record of it: the link code, your device ID, and the file names, sizes, and lengths. The video and the notes themselves are deleted. Notes saved in the app are removed from your phone after 30 days.

If you leave notes on a review link

You don't need an account, and we don't ask for your name or email. We store the notes you write so the actor can read them, until the link's cleanup. We record when the link was first opened. We don't store your IP address or browser details with the link. Your IP address may be used for about a minute to block spam, and may appear in our hosting provider's logs.

The actor is responsible for who they send a link to.

Remote Reader

Remote Reader is a live session. The actor's camera and microphone, and the reader's microphone, are streamed through LiveKit Cloud. We don't record the live session on our servers. When the session ends, the room is closed and any attached sides are deleted from our storage.

The reader's voice is recorded into the actor's take, on the actor's phone. Before joining, the reader sees a notice saying so and must tap Continue. That recording stays on the actor's phone, and in their iCloud if they use iCloud Backup. It isn't uploaded to us.

We keep the session's start and end times and the actor's device ID. We don't store anything identifying the reader. Their IP address may be used briefly to block spam and may appear in hosting logs.

Subscriptions

Iris Pro is sold through Apple. Apple handles payment, and we never see your card details, Apple ID, or billing address. The app only asks Apple whether Pro is active. Cancelling and refunds go through Apple.

Analytics

Iris sends anonymous usage events to TelemetryDeck, such as "export finished" or "recording started", so we can see which features work. They never include your name, email, project titles, or our device ID. TelemetryDeck isn't used for advertising, and we don't share the data with anyone.

Camera, microphone, Photos, and speech

Iris uses the camera and microphone to record your takes and for Remote Reader. It uses Photos to save takes, import clips you pick, and mark hearted takes as favourites. Rehearsal transcripts are made on your phone by Apple's speech recognition and never sent to us.

How long things are kept

Children and minors

Actors under 18 use Iris, and video of minors can pass through review links and Remote Reader. Iris isn't designed as a children's app and isn't in the App Store's Kids category.

If the actor is under 18, a parent or guardian must agree to the Terms and supervise. If the actor is under 13, a parent or guardian must set up and run the app, including review links, Remote Reader, and any subscription.

Review and Remote Reader links have no login, so anyone with the link can see what's on it while it's active. Only share them with people you trust.

Parents and guardians can email [email protected] to have a child's information removed. Include the full review or Remote Reader link: there are no accounts, so I can't find anything from a name alone.

Your rights

Because Iris has no accounts, I usually need the review or Remote Reader link to find anything on our server. Email [email protected].

Where your information is processed

I'm in British Columbia, Canada. Depending on the feature, your information is handled by:

Each has its own privacy policy and may store data outside Canada.

Security

Iris talks to our server over encrypted connections. Review and Remote Reader links are long random codes, but anyone who has one can open it, so treat them like a password. If a breach happens that the law requires me to report, I'll notify the people affected and the relevant privacy regulator, as PIPA, PIPEDA, and the UK GDPR require.
